{"id":110696,"date":"2025-04-23T18:51:11","date_gmt":"2025-04-23T22:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gracechristian.edu\/?p=110696"},"modified":"2025-04-23T18:51:11","modified_gmt":"2025-04-23T22:51:11","slug":"dr-mat-loverin-transformational-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gracechristian.edu\/blog\/dr-mat-loverin-transformational-teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Mat Loverin \u2013\u00a0Transformational Teaching","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" data-start=\"142\" data-end=\"286\">&#8220;If you\u2019re teaching with love, you can\u2019t always put cookies on the top shelf and expect students to reach them,\u201d <strong data-start=\"142\" data-end=\"284\">Dr. Mat Loverin \u201998 says.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"288\" data-end=\"571\">\u201cThere will always be a student that can reach that level, but if I only teach that student, then I\u2019m going to have another dozen students in the class who are frustrated. The real magic of the classroom is when you can curate an environment that\u2019s transformational for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"288\" data-end=\"571\">Mat has been teaching at Grace Christian University for nearly two decades, with a classroom philosophy focused on transformational relationships. After graduating from Grace Bible College in 1998, he went on to the University of Notre Dame where he earned his master\u2019s degree and eventually his PhD in theology with an emphasis in moral theology and Christian ethics. With a wide breadth of knowledge and a foundation in the Bible, Mat teaches theology, philosophy, and ethics at Grace today. But for Mat, it\u2019s not just about the content; it\u2019s also about the context.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"288\" data-end=\"571\">\u201cThe classroom is a gateway to mentoring,\u201d he says, and his track record with students proves his commitment. In addition to mentoring, Mat and his wife, Michelle, provide premarital counseling to couples before Mat officiates weddings\u2014a rich and rewarding way to impact students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"288\" data-end=\"571\">\u201cI just got an email from a student who said, \u2018Your words of affirmation to me and my performance in class have been one of the most meaningful things.\u2019 I don\u2019t necessarily feel a personal connection with every student,\u201d Mat says. \u201cBut the fact that this student would say this to me, showed me that my feedback to that student was transformational.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"2053\"><strong data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"1818\">Theologically equipped<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"2053\">When Mat was a student, he says the emphasis on academic rigor was exactly the environment where he excelled. Pursuing his degree in biblical studies, he describes his undergraduate self as \u201cacademic,\u201d \u201ccritical,\u201d and \u201ca handful.&#8221; He wasn\u2019t satisfied with the answers everyone else accepted, and he pursued truth with an uncommon fervor. He pushed boundaries with doctrinal and denominational beliefs but was always well-intentioned. He wanted his faith\u2014and Grace\u2019s beliefs\u2014to conform to Scripture in a way he could understand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"2053\">\u201cI benefited tremendously from language studies,\u201d he says. \u201cI felt like I got a world-class education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"2053\">He learned to read and translate Greek from Dale DeWitt, professor emeritus of Bible and theology, who wouldn\u2019t accept his students\u2019 \u201cslapdash\u201d translations and demanded higher quality work. The high-level expectations forced Mat to have high-level performance, and he benefited from it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"2053\">\u201cAnd so when I got to Notre Dame, I felt extraordinarily well prepared,\u201d he says. \u201cThere was nothing that came at me that I wasn\u2019t theologically equipped to at least negotiate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"2053\">While at Notre Dame, Mat returned to Grace\u2019s campus for an alumni weekend with hopes to introduce himself to the new staff and faculty, which had changed since his time as a student.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"2053\">\u201cI came to meet the new administration and say, \u2018Hey, this is who I am and I\u2019m finishing my PhD, and I\u2019d like to come teach here at some point.\u2019 Just to get my foot in the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"2053\">During that alumni weekend, he met Michelle (Spykerman) \u201904. A year and a half later, they were married and moved to Grace\u2019s campus where Michelle was a resident director in the women\u2019s dorms. Mat began teaching part-time while finishing his dissertation.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"6125\" data-end=\"6350\"><strong data-start=\"6125\" data-end=\"6148\">Teaching it forward<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6125\" data-end=\"6350\">His teaching style was impacted especially by his professors at Notre Dame. He had been a teaching assistant; mentored by a professor, he learned teaching and grading techniques he still practices. One professor in particular, he recalls, would seamlessly incorporate student questions into his lecture, which made students feel heard and valued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6125\" data-end=\"6350\">\u201cI would be sitting in class thinking what he did was really cool. I wanted to be like that,\u201d Mat says. From these experiences, he crafted his own classroom philosophy and prepared to teach. But the classroom today is a little different than when Mat was a student. It\u2019s more than just education. With fewer college-ready high school graduates, and with the decline of biblical literacy, demanding academic excellence isn\u2019t always helpful for every student.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6125\" data-end=\"6350\">\u201cI was fortunate to grow up in a church with a lot of biblical literacy, so I was well-trained as a teenager coming to Bible college for the first time,\u201d Mat says. \u201cBut that\u2019s not the story of every student who comes to Grace.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3567\" data-end=\"3785\"><b>Transformational Relationships\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3567\" data-end=\"3785\">Although there are many students who attend Grace for its biblical rigor and scholarly expectations, for the students who are already motivated to educate themselves, Grace\u2019s community is key.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3567\" data-end=\"3785\">\u201cYou can learn anything through the internet or AI now\u2014with good search terms, you can learn whatever you want, and you don\u2019t need the classroom. But what you do need is someone who knows how to draw out of you something that couldn\u2019t be drawn out any other way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3567\" data-end=\"3785\">Grace\u2019s classes provide opportunities for transformational student-professor relationships that fosters growth and excellence, both academically and personally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3567\" data-end=\"3785\">\u201cThere\u2019s an \u2018aha!\u2019 moment in the classroom where you can see on people\u2019s faces that they get it in a new way,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s a moment of illumination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3567\" data-end=\"3785\">With a college environment where the professor-to-student ratio is more manageable than most universities, Grace professors have more opportunities to connect with students on deeper levels, like spiritual and personal development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3567\" data-end=\"3785\">\u201cYou know, in conversations that happen at 10 o\u2019clock at night, when I come to my office to get a book that I forgot, and I happen to run into a student, and we have a 20-minute conversation that is life changing. That\u2019s my impact. And it wouldn\u2019t happen unless the student felt a relationship with me that comes from the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3567\" data-end=\"3785\">For professors like Mat, those moments, however big or small they may be, are the most rewarding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3567\" data-end=\"3785\">\u201cI just want to make a little contribution. Maybe that little contribution for some people will be a life-changing contribution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3567\" data-end=\"3785\">Mat\u2019s goal is to see students fulfilling their calling in whatever capacity that looks like. Maybe it\u2019s starting a business, or being part of a church, or going to graduate school to pursue an academic career, or coming back to Grace to pay it forward. This is what success looks like for Grace graduates. There are certainly other aspects of life at Grace that impact students\u2019 spiritual lives: chapel, athletic teams, student events, and peer relationships. But the impact of transformational relationships with professors like Mat is crucial for students, and it\u2019s what sets Grace apart. Because at Grace, the goal goes beyond academic credentials: \u201cI want my students to be transformed into the image of Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"border-left: 5px solid #00677f; padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5920\" data-end=\"6072\"><strong data-start=\"5920\" data-end=\"5939\">Sarah Cross \u201924<\/strong> holds a <a href=\"https:\/\/gracechristian.edu\/academics\/programs\/bs-communication\/\">B.S. in Communication<\/a> from Grace.
