Grace Christian University’s Mission

Grace Christian University’s mission is Graduating Courageous Ambassadors for Christ Who Make an Eternal Impact Wherever They Go. To prepare students to make that impact, they engage in biblically-integrated learning experiences and key transformational relationships with faculty, staff, and other students on campus and online.

Our academic courses and programs play a pivotal role in the Grace experience, and overseeing all of those programs presents a unique challenge and responsibility that I take very seriously.

Mat-Loverin-Quote-2

Refreshed Learning Outcomes

Without apology, we want the education Grace offers to students to be biblically distinctive. So in the Spring of 2025, the faculty approved these new learning outcomes.

We want our graduates to:

LEARN: Cultivate Bible-centered wisdom in every area of academic learning and professional skill.

GROW: Reflect the love of God and Christian character through transformational relationships.

SERVE: Engage in Christ-centered service in church, career, and community.

Moreover, we want every graduate to display these things with excellence and character that is reflective of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in every area of life.

Biblical Integration in Every Course

The “biblical integration” we strive for is the intentional, holistic blending of biblical truths, rooted in Scripture’s narrative of creation, fall, and redemption, with insights from the natural and social sciences.

In every class, Scripture serves as the authoritative lens for evaluating and critiquing ideas, values, and culture. Affirming that “all truth is God’s truth,” this approach gives a privileged place to the Bible as God’s normative authority, guiding a dialogue with human reason and experience both inside and outside of the classroom.

It also helps students develop a biblical imagination, engaging learning with their emotions, senses, and creativity, so that Scripture shapes how they think, feel, act, and respond as courageous ambassadors for Christ.

Academic Programs

I’m happy to say that Grace continues to offer degree program majors that clearly reflect our mission and identity as a biblical university. In the Online campus, our Leadership & Ministry major continues to lead the way, with Psychology, Human Services, and Business degrees going strong.

On Campus, our most popular majors are Business, Leadership & Ministry together with Biblical Studies, Sports Communication and Management, with Psychology and Criminal Justice programs as well. As of 2025, students who take our 30-credit Bible Core can also be eligible for a second major in Christian Studies alongside their professional degree. Grace also offers the two-year Associate of Arts degree, as well as four Master’s degrees in Ministry, Organizational Leadership, Higher Education Leadership, and Business Administration (MBA).

As I lead Academics at Grace, we continue to examine the marketplace for degrees that will be attractive to prospective students. A recent survey indicated that one of the most important things we do for our students is develop degree programs that lead to meaningful jobs in the future.

Artificial Intelligence & Higher Education

Mat-Loverin-Quote-1

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing field and higher education is consistently challenged to keep up. I, along with Associate Provost Dr. Scott Shaw, have been named to the national Higher Education Artificial Intelligence Council sponsored by the Center for Digital Education, a division of eRepublic.

This gathering of higher education leaders is meeting several times through the 2025-26 academic year to discuss how AI is affecting colleges and universities in the areas of teaching and learning, student success, and process efficiencies. We hope to both learn a lot from this group, and represent faith-based and biblical higher education well.

Here on campus, I am currently leading the Grace AI Guidance Council, a group composed of a wide array of faculty, staff, students, administrators and board members. Our task is twofold. First, to assemble as much relevant information as possible from the current trends in AI and higher education in order to inform our decision making here at Grace, especially as it pertains to our biblical worldview.

Second, to develop guidance and recommendations for decision-makers on campus when it comes to any and all implementations of AI: we want any interaction with this emerging technology to be reflective of our mission, vision, and core values, in short, our identity, as a biblical university.

Rooted in Mission

Mat-Loverin-Quote-3

At Grace Christian University we remain unwavering in our purpose, which remains essentially unchanged since our founding as Milwaukee Bible Institute in 1939.

I can remember when I was a student attending Grace Bible College from 1994 to 1998 and a “new” mission statement was established: Graduating Godly Individuals Prepared to Serve Christ in Church and Society. I remember thinking at the time, “Wow! That’s a pretty succinct statement of what this place is all about. ”I am so grateful to be a graduate of Grace Bible College; this experience made me who I am and is such a key part of my story.

Today, as a biblical university, our mission statement is refreshed once again to reflect both our heritage and the unique brokenness of a fallen world that needs the truth of the Gospel as much as ever before. I am excited to lead Academics as we navigate the changing landscape of higher education.

We are cultivating a learning environment where a new generation of students will understand and experience what it means to be rooted in a biblical identity and to be transformed into courageous ambassadors for Christ.

Grace Partners with West Michigan Construction Institute https://gracechristian.edu/blog/grace-partners-with-west-michigan-construction-institute/ Wed, 11 Dec 2024 17:25:10 +0000 https://gracechristian.edu/?p=109979 The post Grace Partners with West Michigan Construction Institute appeared first on Grace Christian University.

Grace Christian University and the West Michigan Construction Institute (WMCI) have joined forces to create an innovative educational pathway that bridges Bible-centered higher education and hands-on trade skills. This partnership is a game-changer for students seeking to combine their passion for skilled trades with the transformative impact of a biblical education.

Located just 2.6 miles apart in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Grace Christian University and WMCI offer a seamless blend of programs that empower students to excel academically, spiritually, and professionally. Here’s an in-depth look at this exciting collaboration and why it’s a perfect fit for students looking for this unique path in education and career development.

The Purpose Behind the Partnership

In today’s evolving job market, many students are seeking alternatives to traditional four-year degrees. At the same time, employers in industries like carpentry & construction are searching for candidates with both technical skills and leadership capabilities. Recognizing these trends, Grace Christian University and WMCI formed this partnership to meet a growing need: offering students the opportunity to earn a college degree while gaining nationally recognized trade certifications.

For students, this means the best of both worlds. They can grow in their faith, develop marketable skills, and graduate with the tools to make an eternal impact in their communities. For employers, this partnership creates an opportunity to hire well-rounded, highly qualified candidates ready to lead in the construction industry.

How the Partnership Works

The collaboration between Grace Christian University and WMCI offers flexible options tailored to students’ academic and career goals. Whether you’re a high school graduate exploring trade skills or an adult student advancing your career, there’s a pathway for you.

What Students Can Expect

Students in this partnership benefit from top-tier resources at both institutions. From state-of-the-art labs to personalized career support, the programs are designed to equip students with everything they need to succeed.

WMCI Facilities

WMCI’s facilities are among the best in the industry. The institute features:

 • High-Tech Labs: Four interactive learning labs provide hands-on training in trades like carpentry, plumbing, and sprinkler fitting.
 • Classrooms: Nine modern classrooms facilitate in-depth learning and discussions.
 • Unique Features: A climate-controlled sandpit allows students to practice concrete and plumbing skills during winter months.

Grace Christian University Resources

At Grace, students gain access to a biblically centered education that shapes their worldview and prepares them for leadership. Programs emphasize personal growth, community service, and a commitment to Christ’s teachings.

Hands-On Learning at WMCI

WMCI’s programs stand out for their experiential learning model. Every course combines classroom instruction with practical, hands-on training. For example:

 • Carpentry Program: Students begin with general carpentry, mastering foundational skills like framing and insulation, before advancing to commercial techniques using steel and drywall.
 • Concrete Program: In this winter-only program, students practice concrete finishing in realistic conditions using WMCI’s climate-controlled sandpit.
 • Plumbing & Sprinkler Fitting: Students can pursue multiple certifications for specialized roles in high-demand trades.

All WMCI programs are accredited by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), ensuring students graduate with nationally recognized certifications. These credentials are portable, allowing students to transfer credits to other institutions or relocate without starting over.

Biblical Values Meet Practical Skills

One of the most compelling aspects of this partnership is the way it integrates Biblical values with professional training. Students at Grace Christian University complete coursework rooted in biblical truth, including a Bible and Theology Core. This curriculum lays the foundation for students to graduate as courageous ambassadors for Christ, equipped to make an eternal impact in the construction industry and beyond.

At the same time, WMCI’s hands-on training ensures that students develop the technical skills necessary to excel in their trade.

Flexible Scheduling for Today’s Students

Grace and WMCI will work together to allow students to complete a degree and certifications simultaneously. During the day students will attend their Grace courses, setting them on a path to complete a degree and one evening per week to complete their certification with WMCI. Our currently recommended certifications for this pathway are Carpentry, Plumbing and Sprinkler fitting.

Friday’s Off: Grace and WMCI both do not offer classes on Friday giving students the space to study or work.

WMCI and Grace will work together to ensure students can attend both institutions’ courses while progressing toward completing their goals.

Career Support and Community Connections

WMCI goes beyond training by connecting students with top employers in West Michigan’s construction industry. Career services include:

 • Resume Support: Students receive guidance in crafting resumes that showcase their skills and certifications.
 • Job Search Strategies: Advisors help students identify and pursue job opportunities aligned with their goals.
 • Career Assessments: Students gain a clear understanding of their strengths and career interests.

Additionally, WMCI collaborates with local organizations that are in need of assistance with a project giving students opportunities to apply their skills in meaningful community projects.

Tuition & Financial Aid

Tuition is billed separately for Grace Christian University and WMCI, with costs designed to remain accessible:

 • Grace Christian University Tuition: Students pay standard tuition rates for courses at Grace, with advisors available to assist in financial planning.
 • WMCI Tuition: $2,000 per semester plus books and fees, this price is consistent across all certificates, books and fees vary by course.

Both institutions are committed to helping students maximize financial aid opportunities, including federal grants, scholarships, and community funding.

A Unique Opportunity for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

One of the standout features of this partnership is its potential to serve aspiring business owners. Many students enter WMCI programs with the dream of one day owning their own construction company. Through this collaboration, students can gain the technical skills needed to master their trade at WMCI while studying business principles at Grace Christian University.

For example, Grace’s business courses cover essential topics like financial management, marketing, and leadership. These skills complement WMCI’s trade training, enabling graduates to launch and grow successful businesses grounded in Christian values.

Future Plans and Program Expansion

The partnership between Grace Christian University and WMCI is just beginning, with exciting plans for the future:

 • Additional Enrollment Periods: WMCI aims to offer more start dates to accommodate growing demand.
 • New Courses: Plans include leadership and supervisory training programs tailored to the construction industry.
 • Dual-Enrollment Pathways: High school students may soon have expanded opportunities to begin their education early by taking courses at both institutions.

As these initiatives unfold, the collaboration will continue to provide students with innovative ways to achieve their educational and career goals.

Why This Partnership Matters

This partnership stands out for its ability to meet the needs of a diverse student population. For high school graduates exploring career options, adult learners seeking advancement, or aspiring entrepreneurs ready to build their future, the program offers unparalleled opportunities.

Moreover, the partnership aligns with Grace Christian University’s mission to graduate courageous ambassadors for Christ. By integrating Bible- centered education with practical skills, students are prepared to lead with integrity and make an eternal impact.

At Grace Christian University, we passionately believe in learning, growing, and serving. Our mission aims to shape students into courageous ambassadors for Christ who make an eternal impact wherever they go. Let’s explore how students become these courageous ambassadors.

Learn: Biblical Truth at Our Core

Every student at Grace Christian University is grounded in biblical truth. We don’t just teach from the Bible; we live by its principles. Our curriculum integrates God’s Word into every subject, ensuring that students’ behaviors and actions align with biblical teachings. From day one, freshmen learn to share their faith journey. They learn to articulate their personal testimony of finding salvation through Jesus Christ. As they progress, students engage in theology classes. Here, they learn to defend their faith courageously. As a result, they can respond to challenging worldviews with a firm, unapologetic stance.

Our commitment to biblical truth goes beyond knowledge. Students learn to apply these truths in their everyday lives. This approach builds a solid foundation for their personal and professional lives, equipping them to be effective ambassadors for Christ. Their education is not just academic but deeply spiritual and transformational.

Our dedicated faculty and staff are dedicated to nurturing this environment through mentorship and guidance. They are fully supportive of students throughout. We believe a comprehensive understanding of God’s Word is essential for growth and ministry. By embedding biblical truth into every aspect of our education model, our students are well-prepared to live out their faith courageously and confidently in a world that desperately needs the hope of Christ.

Grow: Intentional Mentoring

We understand growth requires intentional mentoring. Our faculty and staff build strong, supportive relationships with students. They guide students through spiritual and emotional development. Regular one-on-one meetings provide a safe space for discussing personal challenges. Students can explore spiritual questions and life goals in these sessions. This intentional mentoring is a cornerstone of our educational approach.

Additionally, upperclassmen and mature in faith student leaders play a vital role in mentoring. Through peer-led groups and informal gatherings, they share their experiences. These student leaders offer insights from their walk with the Lord, providing mutual support and encouragement.

Our “Rooted Discipleship Program” integrates faith and mentoring into athletics. All teams spend practice time discussing their spiritual lives. reading the Bible and identify areas for growth. These conversations help athletes integrate their faith into every aspect of their lives and build a strong spiritual foundation.

Mentoring at Grace extends beyond formal programs. Faculty, staff, and coaches invest in students’ lives. They offer guidance as students navigate their college years, helping students develop courage, faith, and a deeper understanding of their identity in Christ.

Serve: Engaged in Service

Service is a core component of our education. We believe serving others is a fundamental expression of our faith. Each semester, every student participates in required service projects. These projects help students understand the importance of serving others. all the while providing practical opportunities to make a positive impact in their communities.

Our commitment to service goes beyond local projects. Throughout the year, faculty lead study and ministry trips nationwide and internationally. These trips provide hands-on experience in serving diverse populations. Students step out of their comfort zones and develop a heart for global missions.

One of Grace’s core values is being “Ministry Focused.” We equip students to serve courageously in any vocation. By integrating service into every degree program, we ensure that students are not only academically prepared but also ready to make a meaningful difference in the world. Internships play a key role in this preparation. Each student completes an internship related to their field of study. As a result, they gain real-world experience and serve in a professional context.

Service at Grace Christian University is a way of life. Our students are encouraged to view service as an integral part of their faith. Through service, they learn to embody the teachings of Jesus Christ, demonstrating love, compassion, and humility in all they do.

Service projects lead to transformational experiences. Students return from these experiences with a renewed sense of purpose. They gain a deeper understanding of their faith. These opportunities help them develop leadership skills, build relationships, and gain a broader perspective on the world and their place in it.

At Grace, service is not just something we do; it is who we are.

The post How to Prepare for College Over the Summer appeared first on Grace Christian University.

]]>
As you close the chapter on high school and look toward college, the summer months can be a crucial time to prepare for college. At Grace Christian University, we believe that thoughtful preparation can help ease the transition and set you up for success. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to make the most of your summer before starting college.

1. Set clear goals.

Identify your priorities.

Before diving into summer activities, take a moment to identify your priorities. What do you want to accomplish before starting college? Whether it’s academic preparation, earning some extra money, traveling to new places, or simply relaxing, setting clear goals will help you stay focused and make the most of your time.

Create a plan.

Once you’ve identified your priorities, create a plan. Break down your goals into manageable tasks and set deadlines. This approach will help you stay organized and ensure that you’re making steady progress throughout the summer.

2. Strengthen your academic skills.

Review Core Subjects

Summer is a great time to brush up on core subjects like math, science, and English. Reviewing these subjects will help you feel more confident and prepared for college-level coursework. Consider using online resources, textbooks, or even enrolling in a summer class to keep your skills sharp. Brainscape and Cram offer thousands of premade flashcards, while tools like Quizlet even provide quizzes and study modules. CK-12 and Photomath can assist with your science and math homework and help you figure out how to solve complex equations.

Develop study habits.

College requires a higher level of self-discipline and effective study habits. Use the summer to develop and refine these habits. Practice setting aside regular study time, taking notes, and managing your time effectively. These skills will be invaluable once the semester begins.

Study and read.

Your education should not be neglected over the summer months. It’s important to keep your brain active and continue to read. This also helps with the transition back to your academics.

3. Gain real-world experience

Find a job or internship.

Working a summer job or internship can provide valuable experience and help you develop important skills. Look for opportunities that align with your career interests or provide a chance to learn something new. Additionally, earning some extra money can help ease the financial burden of college expenses.

Volunteer

Volunteering is another excellent way to gain experience and make a positive impact in your community. Seek out volunteer opportunities that match your interests and allow you to develop new skills. Volunteering can also be a great way to meet new people and build your network.

4. Prepare for the college transition.

Attend orientation programs.

Many colleges, including Grace Christian University, offer orientation events before classes start. These events are designed to help you get acquainted with the campus, meet other students, and learn about important resources. Make sure to mark these events on your calendar so you don’t miss them.

Plan your move.

If you’re moving away from home for college, use the summer to plan your move. Make a list of items you’ll need for your dorm room or apartment and start gathering supplies. Check out our packing list and consider talking to current college students to get advice on what to bring and what to leave behind.

Get Organized

There’s no reason for students not to relax and enjoy their summer. But some of it should be spent preparing for the upcoming semester. It’s important to spend your time wisely to help decrease anxiety. Students should invest in a planner to stay organized. The planner will be extremely helpful to determine when things should be completed and will be useful for the academic year.

5. Get to Know Your College

Research Campus Resources

Familiarize yourself with the resources available on your college campus. This might include academic advising, tutoring services, libraries, and recreational facilities. Knowing where to find support can make a big difference when you need it.

Connect with Future Classmates

Use social media and college forums to connect with your future classmates. Joining groups or attending virtual meetups can help you make friends and build a support network before you even arrive on campus.

Register for classes.

Get your enrollment process started as soon as possible. Take the time in the summer to meet with your advisor and discuss your courses. Registering early helps you get into the classes you want before they fill up.

Buy Textbooks

Right after you register for classes, get in contact with your professors to get a list of textbooks you will need for your courses. The earlier you buy your books, the better chance you have to buy them at a discounted price and make sure they don’t sell out. You can buy textbooks used, rented, or at a discount!

6. Take care of yourself.

Focus on physical health

Maintaining good physical health is essential as you prepare for college. Use the summer to establish healthy habits like regular exercise, balanced eating, and sufficient sleep. These habits will help you stay energized and focused throughout your college experience.

Prioritize mental well-being.

The transition to college can be stressful, so it’s important to prioritize your mental well-being. Practice stress-management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or journaling. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider talking to a counselor or mental health professional.

Apply for scholarships and financial aid.

If you have not already done so, it is time to apply for government financial aid assistance (FAFSA). Use this time to check out Grace Christian University’s financial aid department for additional scholarships.

7. Enjoy the summer and have fun.

Make time for relaxation.

While preparing for college is important, don’t forget to enjoy your summer. Make time for relaxation and fun activities that you love. Whether it’s spending time with friends and family, going on a vacation, or pursuing a hobby, make sure to balance work and fun activities.

Student Hangout

Create lasting memories.

This summer is a unique time in your life, so take advantage of it. Plan outings with friends, explore new places, and create lasting memories. These experiences will not only provide a well-deserved break but also leave you refreshed and ready to start your college journey with enthusiasm.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for college over the summer is about more than just checking items off a to-do list. It’s about making the most of this exciting time in your life. By setting clear goals, strengthening your academic skills, gaining real-world experience, and taking care of yourself, you’ll be well-prepared to start college with confidence and enthusiasm.

At Grace Christian University, we’re here to support you every step of the way. Whether you’re attending orientation, seeking academic advising, or simply looking for a community of like-minded individuals, our caring community is ready to welcome you. We believe that, with the right preparation and mindset, you can make a successful transition to college and thrive in your new environment.

The post Godly Friendships During Your College Years – The Benefit of Christian Relationships appeared first on Grace Christian University.

]]>
For many students entering the realm of Christian college, the prospect of being surrounded by hundreds of Christians in the buildings where you live and study every day is totally new. Unless you attended a Christian school, most people have not experienced the many blessings and benefits of getting to do life with other Christians 24/7. Godly friendships during your college years are something you can’t put a price on. And many, many of the friendships that have begun at Grace Christian University have blossomed into lifelong relationships that last through the decades.

But having godly friendships isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. There are many aspects to friendships that are challenging. Yet the Bible reminds us that “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” (Proverbs 17:17). And, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17).

Challenges of Godly Friendships During Your College Years

Friendships are worth having – despite the hard work that they sometimes take. One challenge that Christian college students can experience is the staggering amount of opportunities that there are for friendships right there in your dorm or classroom. When you enter Christian college and are suddenly surrounded by hundreds of Christians, it’s natural to want to be friends with everyone. However, trying to have deep relationships with too many people can quickly lead to overwhelm and frustration.

Keep in mind that Jesus Himself did not try to have very close relationships with every person. Jesus modeled different levels of friendship.

He had His inner circle of three (Peter, James, and John). Then He had the twelve disciples. After that, He also had crowds of people whom He loved, healed, taught, and fed (read John 6:1-15).

It’s important to recognize that you can’t have deep relationships with everyone – as much as you might want to. During your time at college, you will have a few people who are your “best friends”. These are people you can confide in, share confidential prayer requests with, and spend the most time with.

After that, you’ll have a number of casual friendships. These are people you know fairly well and enjoy spending time with.

Outside of this group, you can be friendly to everyone! There is certainly blessing in knowing many people and sharing smiles and hellos.

Godly friendships take time, effort, and work. As humans, this means that we only have the capacity for a handful of deep friendships.

Benefits of Christian Relationships

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).

God created His people for fellowship. The Christian life is full of trials and temptations. God in His grace has gifted us with means to withstand these temptations and trials and to find our fulfillment in Christ. Christian friendships are one of these means.

Hebrews 3:12-13 says, “Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today”, that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”

The benefits of strong, godly friendships during your college years and beyond are many. Godly friendships provide:

 • Accountability
 • Encouragement
 • Joy and laughter
 • Godly influence
 • Spiritual wisdom and advice
 • A listening ear

Making Godly Friends During Your College Years

The benefits of godly friendships are profound. But in order to have a friend, you need to be a friend, too. What does it take to build encouraging relationships with those around you?

If the idea of making friends sounds overwhelming or intimidating to you, don’t worry. Everyone around you probably feels the same way! Instead of worrying about what others think of you, focus on being a good friend to others. Make the people around you feel comfortable, and show an interest in them.

Start by asking simple questions, like someone’s name, where they’re from, what they’re studying, and what they hope to do after college. Deep friendships are grown when people find common ground. As you meet more people – whether in college or elsewhere – you’ll find people who share similarities with you.

Don’t be afraid to initiate. Invite someone to coffee. Share your story. Take a walk. Or gather a group of people to hang out together and play some games.

Then, be a good listener. Make the people around you feel cared for and loved by showing interest in their story and their interests.

C.S. Lewis said of friendship:

“I have no duty to be anyone’s friend and no man in the world has a duty to be mine. No claims, no shadow of necessity. Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art, like the universe itself (for God did not need to create). It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.”

— C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
