Top 3 Estate Plan Sticking Points

Apr 4, 2025 | Alumni, Wise Stewardship, Blog

We believe our lives, and everything in them, are gifts from God. As faithful stewards, we’re called to manage those gifts well, That’s where estate planning comes in. Most people understand the value of having a will or trust. These tools allow you to provide for your loved ones and leave a legacy of faith by supporting ministries and causes that reflect your commitment to Christ. But while many understand what needs to be done, actually getting it done is often where things get complicated. If you’ve ever tried to start (or finish) your estate plan and felt stuck, you’re not alone. Here are three of the most common sticking points families face, and how to move forward with confidence and clarity.

Disagreements Between Spouses

Estate planning is emotional. It often means talking about tough topics, like death, money, and what happens after we’re gone. These conversations can reveal deep differences in opinion between spouses, and those differences can feel overwhelming.

But remember: you’re on the same team. It’s okay to start small. Pray together. Talk openly about your hopes for your family’s future. And don’t be afraid to invite a trusted advisor into the conversation. Sometimes a listening ear and a fresh perspective can help untangle even the tightest knots.

Loved Ones with Unique Needs

Every family is unique. You may have a child with special needs, a loved one facing financial hardship, or someone struggling with addiction. These realities make estate planning more complex, but not impossible.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. But with godly wisdom and experienced guidance, you can make a plan that provides for each person appropriately, protects what’s important, and reflects your desire to support your family.

 Choosing the Right Executor

Who should carry out your wishes? That’s a weighty decision. You want someone trustworthy, responsible, and capable of navigating legal and financial matters. Some choose a close family member or friend. Others choose a professional. There’s no right answer for every situation, but it’s an important discussion to have.

This is another area where a qualified advisor can make a big difference. They can help you weigh your options and make a wise, prayerful decision.
